HERE'S WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO:
You and your band have been given the difficult task of writing an original protest song that voices your concerns about at least one of the following societal issues:
Have fun and write something powerful!
- Poverty
- Corruption
- War
- Racism
- Sexism
- Environmentalism
- You've realized that the band name you've been using for your musical group is pretty lame... Come up with a new name for your group and provide reasoning for why this reflects your band's persona.
- Go to the "Web Resources" page to view examples of protest songs from the last 40 years. Make sure you view/read about at least one song that pertains to each societal issue so that you gain an understanding of what a protest song is and how they are written. Think about which songs or issues you like and dislike. What inspires you? What would you like to voice your opinion on?
- Write a song (lyrics are all that we ask for, but if you write music for it, that's great too!). After writing the song lyrics, there are two more tasks. We want to know, at a detailed level, what your song lyrics mean and why you chose the topic that you did. Second, we want to know what you learned from the protest songs that you explored on the web quest. Which did you like and dislike? Why?
- Refer to the "Evaluation" tab on this website throughout the assignment to make sure that you complete all parts of the task.
Have fun and write something powerful!
